Ambient Mirage is a sampled instrument for Kontakt that focuses exclusively on the Curtis CEM-3328 24 dB Voltage Controlled Low Pass Filter Chips that were at the Analog heart of every Ensoniq Mirage 8-bit sampler. Released in 1984, the CEM-3328 had an accurate exponential scale of over 14 octaves with voltage controlled resonance and the capability of self-oscillation. And it was the only VCF at the time that had switchable volume compensation for high resonance settings, thereby avoiding a signal level loss as resonance increased. The main concept behind Ambient Mirage was to use the CEM-3328 VCF in the Mirage as the main sampled sound source, and then combine this source with vintage Mirage samples for a unique Ambient instrument like no other. The CEM-3328 VCF samples that are included, maintain their genuine sweeping and highly resonant frequencies …All the way to a self-oscillating Sine wave!
The Ensoniq Mirage is an 8-bit sampler with a maximum sampling-rate of 32kHz and a limited 128Kb of RAM. This gave the Mirage a “low-fi, gritty” type of sound that is considered vintage compared to today’s sampling technology. All sound sources were sampled from an Ensoniq Mirage DSK 1, at 44100Hz 16-bit Stereo, to balance that “low-fi, gritty” vintage authenticity, with modern day high quality sound.
To compliment the main Curtis CEM-3328 sound source, Ambient Mirage also includes vintage Voices, Choirs, Fantasy, Synthesizers, Strings, Winds and Percussive single Instrument elements, which are combined into deeply programmed, modern sounding, and very playable Multi patches, for a truly Ambient sound experience. Also included are very rare samples from Triton’s Sound Process. Sound Process was an alternate Operating System that transformed the Mirage from a Sampler, into a full blown 4 oscillator Synthesizer.

The below audio demo showcases all 20 individual Ambient Mirage Kontakt Multi Instruments that are included within the Ambient Mirage sound library, played in order from first to last. All of the Instruments were played and recorded with zero external signal processing involved. All audible Resonant Filter Sweeps within the demo were sampled from an Ensoniq Mirage using the Curtis CEM-3328 VCF on full Resonance, and not swept by Kontakt’s internal filters.
This is the full audio demo, which is roughly 17 minutes long. If you would like to play each Instrument demo individually, with better audio quality, and read a full sound description of the Instruments programming features, please click here to visit the Ambient Mirage Multi Instrument Demo’s page.
The Ambient Mirage Instrument is only $5.00, and Requires Kontakt Version 5.8.0 and above. At only a 100 MB download, it has a small digital footprint, but delivers a large ambient 8-bit lush retro sound that was unique to the Ensoniq Mirage alone.
